Enjoy, Alexis + Trent xx

Wow! You’re a Pro Surfer, that's pretty awesome... Tell us about your surfing career?!

I first started surfing around the age of 2 or 3 (apparently!) and yeah I've been hooked ever since!

I started competing around the age of 12 in the National Junior events all around Australia, then went on to compete for Australia at the World Junior Titles (u/21). From there I started entering a few WQS events around the world and working my way into the WQS prime events (top 100). Only 1 event in, I tore the ligaments in my ankle (grade 2 high ankle) which took a lot longer to heal than anticipated and re injured it after 6 months. 2 years down the track, I have only just returned to competing at the start of this year, picking up a 5th place at the Burleigh WQS 1000 and winning the Cabarita WQS 1000.

I am now back on track to compete on the WQS Prime events for the second half of the 2017 season.

Have you always been this fit and active? What has your fitness journey been like?

Yes I have always had a fit and active lifestyle, competing in every possible sport as a junior, running, athletics, rugby league, rugby union, surf lifesaving, swimming, surfing etc.etc. This kept me fit as a youngster, then around my early 20’s things started getting a lot more serious with my surfing career and I started specifics training in the gym, which I absolutely love. It’s such a different form of fitness compared to surfing all day.

I am currently training with Mark Anderson and the team at Est Health And Performance Culburra Beach with a personal surf specific program.

"Training plays a massive part in Surfing these days and having a good trainer really shows and makes a difference."

What is your biggest personal challenge when it comes to staying fit or healthy eating, and how do you combat it?

My biggest challenge is keeping a positive attitude and staying motivated. I also find when I am training and surfing I don’t eat enough food and that’s where my At Health Australia Protein Supplements come into action!

How would you describe your diet?

Mostly whole foods, balanced macros, lean proteins, and local fresh fruit and veggies.

We know it's important to have health & fitness goals... What's your current fitness goal or challenge?

At the current time my goal with trainer Mark Anderson is to build up my lower body (legs) and improving my diet to reduce body fat and increase lean muscle mass.

How many times a week do you work out, and how long do you typically train for?

I usually try to train in the gym around 2 to 4 times a week, sessions go around 1 to 1.5 hours. Along with surfing as much as possible, and if the waves are good, usually more surfing than gym work.

What are your 3 favourite ways to work out?
Surfing, weight training and getting out into nature for a run.

What is your favourite healthy treat?
My wife’s At Health Australia Protein nut bars! They are to die for!

(Hmmmm with a review like that, we might need to get our hands on the recipe to share!!)

What are your favourite Protein Smoothie ingredients?

At Health Australia Naturally Cacao Protein (30g)

Ice cubes

Mayvers Natural Peanut Butter

Coconut Water

Chia Seeds

Sprinkle of Sea Salt

What do you usually eat for breakfast?

For breakfast I love my avocado on sourdough, with Chilli scrambled eggs!

Who inspires you and why?

I have always looked up to my Dad, as a person and fit old bloke. He still loves his surfing and is in his mid 50’s.

But my most recent inspiration, is one of my best mates Owen Wright, who if you don’t know him is a professional surfer. I have grown up with him and we have been through a lot as mates.

About a year and a half ago he received a major head injury and had bruising on his brain. He was bed ridden for a few months and it was so hard to see him like that, but then coming back to competition this year and winning his first world tour event - from not being able to walk about 6 months earlier, was such an inspiring feat.

Best advice you've ever been given?

To always keep a positive attitude in all aspects of life.

On that note, thanks Ty for being our At Health Australia 'Fit Foodie Inspiration of the Month' - We LOVE seeing people follow their passion and go after their dreams!!

Make sure you follow Ty on Instagram @tywatson to follow his surfing and adventures!!
