Julie brings a lil something special when you first meet her and you will instantly warm to her - mostly due to her wicked sense of humour! I also love her principles for clean, healthy eating and you have to check out her Top 3 Tips to Trim + Tone - they're really easy to do!!
We hope you enjoy reading Julie's health and wellness journey as much as I did!
Tell us about yourself and your career… How did you get started in the Fitness Industry?
As a kid I grew up with my 2 older brothers and parents always competing in various triathlons and marathons, so I think it was inevitable that I would follow in their foot steps and end up doing the same. I competed in triathlons throughout my childhood and teenage years. Although (to be honest with you) when I turned 18, the triathlons & constant training came to an end as my priorities changed as, like most 18 year olds, going out and partying was WAY more fun than training 10x a week.
After a couple of years of spending more time on the dance floor than in the pool, on the bike or running, my old positive habits came back and it’s here my journey really started.
My Dad and I began training for a Half Ironman Triathlon (Swim 1.9km, Ride 90km, Run 21.1km) which we competed in together in 2013. Competing in such a big event with one of the most important persons in my life is unforgettable. Finishing this race brought me so much pride and inspiration, and really got me back in touch with my passion; health and fitness.
I wanted to become a Personal Trainer to help others feel that same feeling I did. I thrive on other peoples success and being apart of their health and fitness journey makes my heart feel warm and fuzzy.
Seeing people’s results and watching things like their self confidence grow or the dress size shrink is what make this job so rewarding.
What would be your top 3 tips for anyone wanting trim and tone?
Hydration - ESSENTIAL. At least 60% of the adult body is made of it and every living cell in the body needs it to keep functioning. Not only do we need water to function properly, water helps flush out toxins and waste materials, It increases metabolic rate, boosts your skins appearance, is essential for healthy digestion and can stop you from feeling tired.
Movement - Move in a way that inspires YOU! To kick start a positive habit start by doing something you absolutely love, from there as your confidence builds you can branch out and try new things.
Note: I strongly believe that everyone needs to do some form of strength training 2x a week to trim and tone. I also think yoga / stretching has huge benefits not only to the bodies flexibility, posture and over all movement but to the mind - which is just as important.
Quality of Nourishment - Watch what you ingest. Is it serving you? Try to reduce your sugar intake and although coffee is amazing, limit it to 2 a day.
Try buy organic where possible - this can be made cheaper by shopping at your local farmers market. Australia has one of the shittiest standards when it comes to pesticide and chemical control on our produce. If you can’t purchase organic always soak your produce in water and apple cider vinegar for around 15 minutes.
Don’t be afraid of fat. Most Essential Vitamins are Fat soluble which means that fat needs to be present for them to be digested properly. (Vitamins A, D, E and K need fat to be absorbed) Where as Vitamins A and C are water soluble.
What is your biggest personal challenge when it comes to staying fit or healthy eating, and how do you combat it?
Great Question! DISCIPLINE - We all have those days where we excuse yourself..’I’m too tired’, ‘I'm too sore’ ‘I deserve that piece of chocolate’ Bla Bla Bla !! Yes - I go through it too.
But whinging and making excuses gets you …. NO WHERE! Constantly checking in with my goals, my why and my vision is enough to kick those excuses away and either get me to a work out or keep me on track with eating.
To combat fitness challenges I literally tell myself “Just do 5 minutes and then you can stop” because usually the hardest part is just getting started… once I'm 5 minutes in, I'm warm and ready to move all excuses are gone and focus is regained. (Blasting Beyonce is also a great motivator for me)
For food challenges I will distract myself with water, a cup of tea or have a handful of nuts.
** With all of that being said, I am not a Robot and a huge believer in ‘listening to your body’ Some days I am just too buggered or I do just want that dam delicious burger. I love being disciplined, moving my body and nourishing it with beautiful ingredients but every now and again I do listen to an excuse or just listen to my body and rest. Its about knowing when it is an excuse or when your body is telling you a strong message.
If it is an excuse just make sure it doesn't become a habit ;)
How would you describe your diet?
At the moment I am eating a Keto inspired diet. I don't usually eat until around 12 then my first meal is filled with deliciousness; Eggs, spinach or rocket, (sometimes bacon) avocado, kimchi or a fermented food, olive oil and mixed nuts.
I LOVE COFFEE, I try to keep hydrated and enjoy a kombucha or two. I drink alcohol maybe once every 2 months.
I DO love burgers, hash browns and pizza but try not to eat them too often - BUT in saying that I have a little motto ‘Sometimes it’s just good for the soul’ If I feel like a burger.. i’ll eat the burger. Life is too short to be too strict all the time.
I eat like this because, simply - it works. I feel clear and focused on an empty belly in the morning and SO enjoy a bulletproof coffee to get me through till 12. Eating this way gives me great energy, I sleep well and my skin looks fresh PLUS who doesn't love eating avocado… like all the time.
We know it's important to have health & fitness goals... What's your current fitness goal or challenge?
Current goals are to do the splits and to hold a hand stand for at least 15 seconds without a wall or someone holding me.
I currently see a Personal Trainer once a week to help me with this as gymnastic tricks aren’t my strong point (it also helps me learn different skills).
How many times a week do you work out, and how long do you typically train for?
At the moment I would train 5 x a week and train for no more then 45 minutes per session.
What are your 3 favourite ways to work out?
Oooohhh Good Q. Circuit, strength and probably boxing would be my favourite 3… Although I have just started doing Reformer Pilates once a week - Holy sh!t, have you tried it?? WOW the burn!!
What is your favourite healthy treat?
Probably a Snickers Smoothie, I don't really eat banana’s so that is a Yummy, creamy, chocolatey, delicious treat OR 85% Dark Chocolate
What are your favourite Protein Smoothie ingredients?
- Naturally Vanilla Protein Powder
- Coconut water or milk
- Coconut Yogurt
What do you usually eat for breakfast?
At the moment I don't usually eat till around midday but my first meal will consist of 2 eggs, avocado, kimchi, rocket / kale slaw, olive oil, salt, pepper and chilli.
Who inspires you and why? ie: could be in a career / healthy eating / personal context.
BEYONCE - I find her work ethic impeccable, she’s committed, disciplined and so dam good at what she does - Having a voice like hers and having hips that move that way don't happen by sitting around and wishing - that is HARD WORK and boy has it paid off!
Best advice you've ever been given?
To be honest I have been given some great advice… but I think you can be given all the advice in the world but until you feel and do things for yourself you never will learn.
Being Brave, Embracing Fear and learning from your mistakes - are things you are told about but until you actually truly deeply feel these things you can not grow, learn and move forward as a stronger being.
What is your favourite inspirational quote?
I don’t think I can answer this with just one answer…
‘Treat people like you would want people to treat your mother’
‘If you’re not fucking up regularly, you’re not trying’ Craig Harper
‘Comparison is the thief of Joy’
