Today we welcome Aneka Reid as our At Health Australia 'Fit Foodie Inspo for October' to share her journey to good health. Aneka is an inspiration for so many reasons - she juggles a demanding career in Marketing with an impressive training schedule not to mention a mouth watering health food blog. Aneka is such an inspiration and you're about to discover why... How would you describe your diet? 

I try to go for a whole food approach, meaning I generally aim towards a “Just Eat Real Food” approach. Within this, I may cross over with elements of Paleo, Sugar Free, Grain Free, etc depending on what I'm cooking.

From my perspective, aiming to eat natural whole foods as often as possible, wherever possible, keeps things much simpler and easier to comprehend. I believe it’s important not to overcomplicate it for yourself and simply bring it back to just eating real foods.

Why do you think it's so important to "Just Eat Real Food"? 

It's not only because of the nutritional value, but also because I know eating unprocessed, healthy whole foods will leave me feeling satisfied, comfortably full, and provide me with the energy I need to get through my working day plus training at night, which is really important to me.

With that said, I also try not to let myself feel guilty if I stray from my regular “clean-eating” habits (mainly on the weekends). Even for pure peace of mind I believe I can treat myself and be a bit naughty with my food…it’s just self control that’s the key here.

What is your favourite healthy treat?

It may seem really simple / boring, but I love my homemade paleo nut granola with coconut milk and a good coconut milk yoghurt. I'm in love with the blend of sweetly spiced, golden, crunchy clusters soaked in creamy coconut…. I could honestly eat a giant bowl full if I let myself - it takes me to a happy place!


What are your favourite Protein Smoothie ingredients?

Banana, Baby Spinach, Kale, Mint, 'At Health Australia' Naturally Vanilla Protein, Coconut & Coco Quench.

What do you usually eat for breakfast?

I eat a small bowl of protein overnight oats or granola before my long drive to work (so I don’t starve along the way!), then I make a green protein smoothie once I arrive.


We know it's important to have health & fitness goals... What's your current fitness goal or challenge?

There are so many challenges in the world of CrossFit…but to name a few on my own shortlist of goals:

On the gymnastic side of things it’s becoming more efficient with my Hand Stand Push Ups, Toes to Bar, as well as mastering a Muscle Up.

In regards to my Olympic lifts, it’s finally achieving a 65kg+ Clean & Jerk and 50kg+ Snatch (lucky I’m not very far off these!!).



How many times a week do you work out, and how long do you typically train for?

I train 5 days a week, generally for around 90 minutes (including warm up/mobility)


What are your 3 favourite ways to work out?

CrossFit, Olympic Weightlifting... CrossFit!


What is the most you have ever...

Clean & Jerk - 64kg

Snatch - 48kg

Have you always been this fit and active? What has your fitness journey been like?

When I was growing up I played a few different team sports like netball, Oztag and touch footy, and long distance running. Then whilst at uni I started a regular gym membership, where I was doing a whole lot of Les Mills classes each week (I was a Body Attack, Body Pump & RPM junkie!). After a couple of years I got a little bored of this and became more interested in doing weight training, but found it hard to stay motivated as I didn't really have a training buddy. Then in early 2013 my boyfriend finally convinced me to sign up to his CrossFit gym and I've loved it ever since! I'm constantly being challenged and aspiring to overcome many weaknesses, whether it be in fitness, strength or skill.


What is your biggest personal challenge when it comes to staying fit or healthy eating, and how do you combat it?

Fitting it all in!

It takes a lot of commitment and planning to maintain the best habits in a healthy lifestyle. I’m lucky that it’s in my nature to be quite organised and regimented and so it’s not a huge effort to find motivation to regularly plan my life out. I usually try to set aside a bit of time on Sundays to cook up of a few different healthy, easy meals to last 2-3 days, and do that again mid week, making sure my food remains fresh as well as interesting/appealing to me.

As I choose to commit 4 out of 5 week nights to training CrossFit after work, I have no choice but to stay organised!!


Who inspires you and why?

I find inspiration in the amazing people that surround me every day… friends, family or even strangers. I see other people do impressive things that I can’t do, have never tried, or have been too afraid to try, and that inspires me to change that.


What is your favourite inspirational quote?

“Stop doubting yourself, work hard, and make it happen.”
